In contrast with Enlightenment skepticism, there has developed another kind of skepticism, the “postmodern” skepticism mentioned at the beginning of this chapter. Enlightenment thought, which postmodernists call “modern,” exalts scientific reason and technology, the tradition that brought about Bultmann’s “electric light and wireless.” Postmodernism questions that rationalism by a more general philosophical skepticism, at least a skepticism against “worldviews” or “metanarratives.”
